Relationship Display shows how the person you are viewing is connected to the site's default person for that tree. When a relationship has already been calculated, it appears near the top of the person's page.
The relationship line is meant to be a quick orientation tool. It helps you see where a person fits without opening a separate chart every time.
The default person is the person the site uses as the comparison point. Each tree can have its own default person. That matters because a historical family tree, a private research tree, and a fictional tree may each need a different starting person.
The default person is usually the site owner or a main family-line person.
The default person can be someone else, so relationships make sense inside that tree.
Logged-in users can set their own default person from their person page.
Some relationship searches are simple. Others can be very large, especially in a tree with hundreds of thousands of people. To keep the site usable, difficult calculations are placed in a background queue.
The queue keeps page loads faster by avoiding long relationship searches while someone is trying to read a person page.
Families can connect in more than one way. Cousin marriages, repeated family connections, step-relations, and married-in branches can all create more than one valid path between two people.
When several paths are found, Relationship Display may show multiple lines. They are not duplicates; they are different ways the same two people connect through the tree.
Use Recalculate when a relationship looks wrong after data has changed. This can happen after merges, parent changes, spouse changes, or reused person IDs.
Recalculate clears the saved relationship for that person pair and lets the site calculate it again. If the calculation is large, it may go back into the queue instead of updating instantly.
Relationship Display follows the site's privacy rules. Visitors may see a living or private person shown as Living or Private. Users with permission to view that person may see the full name instead.
If a relationship seems to show less detail than expected, it may be due to privacy settings, login status, or the tree being viewed.
